Passion Flower

Large and colourful flowers are borne by this rampant climber - all summer long the 10-petalled ornate blooms appear on the numerous stems. The most popular Passion Flower is the almost hardy Blue Passion Flower (P.caerulea) with deeply lobbed leaves and 3 inch wide flowers. P.edulis and P.ligularis bear edible fruit if grown in a warm conservatory or greenhouse.

The showiest species with the largest fruits is P. quadragularis, but this needs near-tropical conditions all year round to survive. Passion Flower plants should be cut back by a third in spring - shorten side shoots.
