Growing Figs
Dont plant a fig in a border - it wil turn into a leafy jungle. Grow it in a large pot or tub. Train it as a fan against a wall or as a dwarf bush - even a 4 foot bush will produce a worthwhile crop.
Buy a 2 or 3 year old partly grown tree. For outdoor cultivation Brown Turkey is the usual choice, but under glass it is better to choose the superior tasting White Marsilles.
Figs are a demanding crop - fruit thinning is quite complicated and daily watering in summer is essential to ensure a good abundant crop. Repot every 2 years and feed when the fruit has formed. A fig is ready for picking when the stalk weakens and the fully coloured fruit hangs downwards. Harvested fruit will keep in a cool place for several; weeks. Little attention is needed however when the leaves fall - stop watering and keep the compost dry over the winter.
